The Woodpecker seems to have returned on 6093kHz. (Heard on 26th April, 2014 from 1830Hz onwards). We normally love our birdlife, but this reminds me of the cold-war and the 1960s when the infamous bird caused much annoyance on the shortwaves. With tensions in the Ukraine - have the Soviets once again put their over-the-horizon radar back into action?
The original Duga-3 installation operated from 1976 to 1989 and according to Wikipedia, some amateur receivers were equipped with special noise blankers to eliminate the sound from the system. For some reason, my Kenwood R-1000 can't eliminate the sound and it is more noticeable on that set than any other, but it is also clearly audible on an R390A.
Has anyone else heard this annoying bird?
