Second Annual AM Rally Special Event

The second-annual AM Rally is inviting operators to explore the original phone mode over the February 2-4 weekend. Co-sponsor Clark Burgard, N1BCG, said the event "is intended to be both fun and educational." It encourages all radio amateurs to get on AM, possibly for the first time.

"Because of resurgent interest in AM, the event is also an opportunity for amateurs new to AM to learn about proper settings and get the most performance out of their station, whether it's modern, vintage, tube, transistor, software-defined, military, boat anchor, broadcast, home brewed, or commercially made," Burgard said.

The AM Rally website includes tips and suggestions for various transmitter types as well as links to additional information. Certificates will be awarded for most states contacted and most contacts overall made by stations in five power-output classes. Some "special recognitions" will be made on an ad hoc basis, Burgard said.

The AM Rally gets under way at 0000 UTC on Saturday, February 3, and concludes at 0700 UTC on Monday, February 5. Band include 160, 80, 40, 20, 15, 10, and 6 meters.

The 2017 AM Rally, which was held in April, was deemed a huge success, with nearly 1,500 contacts reported on the 72 logs submitted.

The AWA Valve QSO party will be held on Saturday 13th May and Sunday 14th May 2017.

Saturday is the AM leg and Sunday the SSB Leg.
Time from 15:00 to 19:00 CAT
Frequencies: 40 Metres 7060-7100 and 80m 3600-3650

Exchange: Call sign; RS and consecutive numbers starting at 001; type of rig used.

Scoring:
All valve radio 3 points per contact
Hybrid radio 2 points per contact
Solid State Radio 1 point per contact

Multiplier, your radio:
All valve radio 3 points per contact
Hybrid radio 2 points per contact
Solid State Radio 1 point per contact

Certificates will be awarded to the 3 highest scores in each category.

Closing date for logs is 31st May 2017

MIDYEAR GETTOGETHER

Please join us for the mid-year get-together of the Antique Wireless Association of Southern Africa.
The get-together will take place on Saturday the 4th of June as part of the Westrand Amateur radio club’s flea market at their clubhouse in Kroton street, Weltevredenpark, Roodepoort (coordinates: S26.14122 E27.91870 / 26°08'28.4"S 27°55'07.3"E)

The fleamarket starts at 12pm, however we’ll set our gazebo up at 11am, just look for the AWASA banner.
